Find out what is the purpose of clean air filter in Bike

We explore the importance of securing your Bike air filter is kept clean and how to carry out maintenance and replacement.

Like us humans, vehicles need to be able to breathe smoothly. When they don’t, performance can be significantly reduced.

The air filter can lead to poorer fuel economy, power loss, and rough idling. Replacing your air filter can be a quick and simple solution to a host of ailments.

Oil Filter types

Oil filters can be characterized by the method in filtering out contaminants or by the process in which the oil flows through the housing. One method is to control the contamination of filters through surface type devices. This is the type of filter used in automobiles. In depth-type filters, the filter media are designed to hold much higher levels of contamination and provide a more circuitous path for lubricant contaminants to become trapped.

Other potential contamination control process includes magnetic and centrifugal filtration. Magnetic filtration utilizes rare-earth magnets or electromagnets to attract and collect ferrous particles as the oil passes through a magnetic flux region. Centrifugal filtration works by integrating a rapidly rotating cylinder to produce a centrifugal force for contamination separation from the oil.

Sponge/foam-type

If you have a sponge- or foam-type air filter, you may be able to clean it with soap or some other solvent. Make sure you remove the majority of the grease and debris. Rinse off and allow to dry. If it is very dirty and damaged, you should replace it.

Pleated paper-type

Pleated paper-style filters may be used twice, but usually no more. Blast compressed air through the rear to dislodge dirt and dust. Make sure it doesn’t get wet or come into contact with oil.

Pleated cotton filters

For aftermarket pleated cotton filters, use some kind of solvent to break down the grime. Soak then rinse from the rear and let it dry in naturally (don’t use a hairdryer as this could shrink the fibers). Use new special filter oil to thinly coat the filters. Let it dry and recoat if required.

After cleaning your filter, it’s time to fit it back into your bike. Make sure your filter is connected correctly so that the air flows through it correctly. Ensure any rubber O-ring is in the correct position. Replace the cover and ensure all screws are back where they came from.

Without a clean filter, your bike will not work optimally. But fortunately, replacing your filter is generally fast, easy and cheap.
